Betty Trimble Hughes – Obituary

Betty Trimble Hughes, 93, of Sheffield, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at home with family by her side. The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, February 8, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. The funeral service will follow in the funeral home chapel with Chad Holder and Dr. Ron Ethridge officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Sheffield.

Mrs. Hughes was born on February 5, 1925, to the late Hurst and Bertha Trimble. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty years, George Hughes, and daughter, Jane Mensing.

Betty served in World War II in the United States Navy (USNR Waves, PHM: 3C). In 2009, she attended Honors Flight to Washington, D.C., along with her brother. Mrs. Hughes was the co-grand marshal of the 2017 Veteran’s Day Parade in Tuscumbia. She was a member of the American Legion Post #31, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sheffield.

Mrs. Hughes was affectionately known as “Nana” to her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and many other children whom she dearly loved.

Survivors include her daughter, Emily Hughes Southern (Farrell) of Muscle Shoals; brother, Warren Bill Trimble (Doris) of Fayetteville, TN; grandchildren, Chris Southern (Nikki), Alec Southern (Sydney), David Mensing (Dina), Michael Mensing (Gretchen), and Farrah Grissom; and eleven great grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons along with Ken Gaskins and Larry Ticer.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Jack McLendon and the staff of Southern Care Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sheffield or charity of choice.
