Mrs. Betty Sue Cook, age 97, of Fort Payne, Alabama, passed away July 24, 2026 at Wills Creek Village, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty Sue (Adams) Cook was born in Dekalb County, Alabama and spent her life serving her family, church, and community. She was married to her husband, James, for sixty years. “Miss” Betty, as she was affectionately known at Harco Drug for decades, was more than a clerk, she was the right hand to the pharmacist. There was a running joke that if the pharmacist ever called out, she could take their place. She would always say if she ever quit that the store would close. She truly loved her job and her customers. She was adored by everyone who knew her. She never met a stranger and made friends with people from near and far. Her outgoing personality served her well, especially during the many years of her eldest son’s music career.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose quiet faith and generous spirit touched many lives. She loved spending time with her family and found her greatest joy in watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.
Betty’s Christian faith was the foundation of her life. She faithfully attended Mount Carmel Baptist Church for many years and found great joy in worship, prayer, and fellowship with her church family. She enjoyed gospel music and was known for her love of angels. Betty was the oldest living member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
Betty’s smile and her legacy of kindness will never be forgotten.
She is survived by her son, David G. Cook (Glenda) of Gadsden, Alabama; brother, Bill Adams of Brunswick, Georgia; grandchildren, Crystal Cook of Fort Payne, Alabama, Emily Ford (Brian) of Canton, Georgia, and Bradley Cook (Tonya) of Gadsden, Alabama.
Great-grandchildren: Vada Jones, Kaden Cook, and Manning Amorde.
Great-great-grandchildren: Oakley and Oliver Cook, Cashton and Dashiel Jones.
Daughter-in-law, Lisa Cook Lindsey (Mark), and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeff and Dovie Adams; husband, James H. Cook; son, Jeffrey A. Cook; brothers, Ray and Norman Adams; sisters, Cora Chastain, Willene Scoggins, Allie Rhodes, and Wanda Greene.
The family would also like to acknowledge a host of special friends including Debbie O’Neal and the compassionate employees of Wills Creek Village, as well as others whose kindness, care, and support may not be individually named but will always be deeply appreciated. Betty also held a special place in her heart for Eddie Smith and Johnny Pierce, and their dear friendship over the years.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, July 26th, at Wilson Funeral Home of Fort Payne with Bishop Walter Turner, Bro. Ricky Phillips, and Bro. David Durham officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 11 a.m. until the 2 p.m. hour of service. Burial will follow at Walnut Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Benevolence/Mission funds at Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
