Betty Jean Woody, 84, of Tupelo died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, while staying in the home of her daughter, Beth Varner, in Sparks, Md. She was born April 9, 1929, in Gloster to Ruth Elizabeth Travis and William Harlan Cooley. She was a retired bookkeeper, having worked for Giles Frosty Foods in Verona and for the Tupelo Uniform Center. She loved puzzles, crafts, sewing, playing cards with family and friends, and spending time with her family. She was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church of Tupelo and enjoyed going to Epworth United Methodist Church in Cockeysville when staying with her daughter in Maryland.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to noon. Services will be at noon Saturday, Oct. 5, at Chancellor Funeral Home – Byram Chapel with Rev. Sid Johnston officiating. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery.
A Tupelo memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Raymond Rooney officiating. Lee Memorial Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
Survivors include one sister, Patt Cain (George) of New Mexico; two daughters, Beth Varner (Hugh) of Maryland and Judy Woody Silas of Tupelo; one son, Joe Woody of Florida; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren from California to Pennsylvania.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Thomas, and a daughter, Babs Davenport.
