Betty Jean Rice McCurry, “BJ” as she was known to family and friends, was born October 1, 1930, to Lloyd and Becky Rice in Knoxville, TN. She grew up in Opelika, AL, attended the University of Georgia, and then transferred to Auburn University where she became a lifelong Auburn Fan. BJ married Wesley McCurry in 1949 and they soon began their family and a journey that has been one to admire and cherish for many generations of her family. In 1961 BJ, Wes, and their two boys moved to Huntsville, AL to follow Wesley’s career in the Insurance industry, which led to opening McCurry Pike Insurance Agency. The family quickly became a part of the Rocket City and deeply involved in the community.

From being a leader in the Girl Scouts organization, taking girls on wilderness camping expeditions, encouraging young women in the community to further their careers, being an avid golfer and Life Master Bridge player, BJ was a rock of strength for many. She always had a passion to help others. For many years she provided subscriptions to The Daily Word for family, friends, and strangers. So much so, that the leadership of Unity Church would occasionally make trips to visit with her. In 1987, she read an article about a lady that started an organization about women who came together to donate money to local organizations that had no access to large contributors. After praying about that for years, she co-founded 100+ Women Who Care of Madison County in 2016. Since that time, the group of women have donated more than $250,000 to Non-profits in the Huntsville Madison County community.

BJ was preceded in death by her best friend, dance partner, golf buddy husband of 56 years, Wesley McCurry.

She is survived by two sons, Ralph (Vicki) and Steve (Tammy); seven grandchildren, Wesley McCurry (Jennifer), Michael McCurry (Tracy), David McCurry (Leigh), Michelle Reeves (Hugh), Griffin McCurry (Alex), Kevin McCurry (Laura Katherine) and Morgan McCurry (fiancé, Isaac Tillery); and 14 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored, advised, and prayed over throughout their lives.

The family would like to thank Hospice Family Care along with many that prayed and cared for her over recent years, with a special thank you to Tracey Drake, who became a lifelong friend to BJ and family for her care and love.

For anyone wishing to honor BJ, she was very passionate about local missions and the family encourages contributions in her honor.
