Betty Carolyn Keyes Kelso-CloughBetty was born on March 26, 1937 to Charles Judson and Alice Ryan Keyes in Limestone County, Alabama. She passed away on January 11, 204 at her Somerville residence. Betty is survived by her daughter, Linda Diane Kelso and her son-in-law, John Kemp. She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Charles and David Keyes; and her husbands (1) James William Kelso and (2) William Wallace Clough, Jr.

After graduation from Ahrens Trade School in Louisville, Kentucky, she joined the U.S. Air Force and worked in Finance and Accounting. She was an enrolled agent and prepared taxes for 50 years; managing an H&R Block in Arlington, Texas; working at Rhodes & Associated Tax Service in Decatur, Alabama and was the owner/founder of Florette Income Tax in Florette, Alabama.

Betty met her husband, Jim Kelso at Travis Air Force Base, California. They were stationed on Okinawa for four years where their daughter Linda was born. After Jim’s retirement, they moved to Texas.

In 1977 Betty and Jim returned to Alabama and began the Happy Valley Ranch in Somerville, Alabama where they raised double polled Santa Gertrudis cattle. She received the President’s Award from the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International in 2012 and in 2013, she was the first female recipient of the Morgan County Cattleman of the Year Award. She was on the Board of Directors for Morgan County Alabama Farmers Federation.

She and husband Bill enjoyed traveling and went to Europe, Costa Rica, New Zealand and the Holy Land as well as many trips in the U.S. to include attending Bill’s 3/3 Marine Corp Reunions. She and Bill participated in the Navajo Mission Life Center, Ojo Encino, New Mexico.

Betty taught Sunday School for most of her adult life and was a member of Blue Springs Baptist church in Somerville, Alabama, where she also sang in the choir.

Family will hold a service at a later date.
