Bernard “Bob” Weisberg, 96, died Monday, May 18, 2015.
Bob was born March 14, 1919 in Boston Massachusetts, son of Rebecca Grosser Weisberg and Hyman Weisberg. He attended pharmacy school, which later became part of Northeastern University, and became a registered pharmacist. He enjoyed fencing and handball. He served honorably as an Army Corpsman and rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant in WWII. He married Sylvia Adelson Weisberg on September 6, 1944 and they lived in New Haven, Connecticut while he worked at the US Army induction station. Sylvia also supported the war effort by working as an inspector at Winchester Repeating Arms.
After the war, they settled in Norwood, Massachusetts where Bob and Sylvia’s brother ran Clark’s Pharmacy for many years until he retired. Bob frequently worked seven days a week, many times for 12 hours a day and would make nighttime emergency deliveries of medications to local nursing and private homes. When he did have leisure time, he was an avid fisherman and kept the freezer stocked with fish. He was a member of the Pinochle Marching and Chowder society from his teen years until he was the last surviving member. He was a founding member of the Science Club. He was a member of the Norwood Camera Club, had his own darkroom and won many ribbons. He served as Treasurer for the Norwood Friends of the library. He enjoyed jazz, had a large record collection and enjoyed going to the jazz clubs. He was a member of the World Socialist Party and considered himself a secular humanist. He enjoyed cooking and food and would drive for hours to try a new restaurant. His fondest memories were times spent on Cape Cod. For the past six years he resided in Lyndhurst, Virginia, with his daughter Amy and son in law, Paul Harmon, whom he said was more like a son to him. He was predeceased by his mother; father; brother, Irving; and beloved wife Sylvia after 67 years of marriage. He is also survived by his daughter Nina, son in law Tony and grandson Lukas Downs of Naples, Florida.
According to his wishes, his body was donated to the Virginia State Anatomical Program.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, PO Box 215, Fishersville, VA 22939.
Family will receive visitors at the home and Bob invited everyone to “have a drink” in his memory.
