MONTGOMERY— A specialized law enforcement unit in Colbert County will continue its efforts to fight drug-related crimes with help from a $63,172 grant awarded by Gov. Robert Bentley.
Colbert County Drug Task Force agents identify, arrest and prosecute traffickers and sellers of illegal drugs. The investigations focus on methamphetamines, cocaine, marijuana and other illegal drugs as well as prescription-drug abuse.
“Drug trafficking and abuse endangers families and communities throughout Alabama,” Bentley said. “This task force is sending the message that the sale of illegal drugs in Colbert County leads to arrest and prosecution.”
The task force is a cooperative effort of the Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office and the police departments of Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, Cherokee, Leighton and Littleville. The Colbert County Commission is the fiscal agency for the task force.
The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA administers a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resource management, job training and career development.
Bentley notified Roger Creekmore, County Commission chairman, the grant had been approved. Matching funds of $21,057 are supplementing the grant.
