  F.1.2.24 Benford Johnson.jpg Benford Mervin Johnson, 77 of Cherokee, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2023. Visitation for friends and family will be Wednesday, January 3rd, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., at Morrison Funeral Home, Cherokee. The funeral will follow at 1:00 in the chapel with Jeff Abrams officiating. Burial will be in Dempsey Cemetery in Franklin County.

Benford was preceded in death by his parents, Reggie and Vivian Johnson; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jim and Mamie Holt.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy Holt Johnson; children, John Christopher (Chris) Johnson, Jason Brent Johnson; grandchildren, Ethan Christopher Johnson, Jason Porter Johnson, Turner Brent Johnson; and daughters-in-law, Suprina Alsup Johnson, and Mandy Nunley Johnson.

Benford was a loving husband, devoted father, and a beloved Poppa to his three grandsons. He had a passion for cattle farming and the outdoors. Benford was retired as a local freight delivery driver with the Teamsters Local #402. After retirement, he drove a school bus for Colbert County Schools. Benford formerly served as a deacon and elder at Cherokee Church of Christ, and a deacon at Tuscumbia Church of Christ.

Pallbearers will be Ethan Johnson, Porter Johnson, Turner Johnson, Kenny Nunley, Ray Nunley, and Keith Willingham.

The family gives a special thank you to Dr. Anthony Horton, the nurses on the third floor, and the ICU nurses at Keller Hospital for their love and care for Benford and for our entire family.
