SHEFFIELD-The Tennessee Valley Museum of Art is thrilled to have local artist
Amita Bhakta host a beginner rangoli workshop on Saturday, August 17th from 10am to
11:30am. This workshop will take place at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, located at 511
North Water Street, Tuscumbia, AL 35674.
Traditionally, Rangoli is an art of decoration drawn on the floor or the entrances of homes. It is
thought to bring good luck, prosperity in the house and in the family, and to welcome guests.
Some mothers in India do this activity every morning, or on a special festive occasion like
Diwali, Onam, and Pongal. It is a folk art that is passed from one generation to another as
mothers teach the art of Rangoli to their kids.
In this fun and informative workshop, artist Amita Bhakta will demonstrate the art of rangoli
and instruct students as they learn how to create their own rangoli designs. Amita Bhakta is
recognized in the state of Alabama as an accomplished rangoli artist and has taught the art of
rangoli across the state. She is an accomplished and well respected artist, educator and
community organizer whose beautiful works focus on her Indian heritage.
This workshop is supported by the Alabama Council on the Arts.
