Barry L. Hartman, 76, of Arab, Alabama, passed away on April 11, 2023 while surrounded by
those who loved him.
Barry was born on July 15, 1946 to Frank and Waynie Hartman in Gadsden, Alabama. He
graduated from Etowah High school in 1964 and went on to study at Auburn University before
joining the Army.
After his enlistment with the Army, he spent 27 years as a cryptanalyst for The National Security
Agency in Fort Meade, MD.
He enjoyed bowling in various leagues in Odenton, MD and watching bowling, Nascar, college
football, and baseball on television. He was also very passionate about cars, his church and his
country.
Once he retired in 2002, Barry returned to Alabama where he worked for a while as a part-time
realtor.
Barry was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Fran (Hartman) Holaway.
He is survived by his sons, Brad D. Howard of Gadsden, AL and Barry L. Hartman Jr. of Severn,
MD; daughter-in-law, Sherryl (Kopp) Hartman of Severn, MD; his grandchildren, Zachary and
Erika Hartman of Severn, MD, and his fiancé, Fran McWhorter of Gadsden, AL.
In his memory, donations can be made to the National Kidney Foundation or Global Vision
Bible Church (Mt. Juliet, TN).
In Alabama, a small family gathering will be held to celebrate Barry’s life. In Maryland,
memorial services will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home (1411 Annapolis Road, Odenton MD
21113) on Wednesday, May 3 from 5:00 – 8:00pm with Military Honors presented at 5:30pm.
He will be laid to rest during a private gathering at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery
(Crownsville, MD)
