Barbara Jean Anderson, on Sunday, August 13, 2023, peacefully left us, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on December 8, 1934, in Havana, Cuba, to American parents, she lived a very full and remarkable 88 years.
Barbara Jean held the position of Executive Director at the Mental Health Association in Huntsville. She initiated the establishment of the Clean Community Commission in Athens, Alabama. Additionally, she dedicated her expertise at Athens State College until her well-deserved retirement.
Barbara Jean had a lively personality and a great sense of humor that made her a joy to be around. She easily made many friends and was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her passing will be deeply felt by all who know and love her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Barry Hollis Anderson and her son, James Gary Gazaway. She is survived by 3 daughters, Michelle Gazaway Van Dyke (David), Julie Gazaway Sprague (Gary), Lindsay Gazaway Grissom (Benny); 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023 at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 noon at Maple Hill Cemetery.
