Austin N. Strickland, of Florence, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at ECM Hospital due to an unexpected illness. Born on Jan. 26, 1924, Austin was a lifetime resident of Florence.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Strickland; and son, Billy Strickland.
A World War II veteran, Austin retired from Reynolds (Wise Alloys) where he worked as an electrician for 31 years. He was a member of Local Union #558. Austin enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and working in his workshop. He had many friends and never met a stranger.
Austin is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Jean Strickland; sister, Roberta Wright, of Florence; daughter, Sherry Kalte, of Huntsville; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Greenview Memorial Park. Officiating will be Roger Houston.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in honor of Austin to Central Heights Baptist Church, 10090 County Road 15, Florence, AL 35633.
