ATHENS-The City of Athens will start its mosquito control measures on Monday, May 19, weather permitting.

Brad Gee, who oversees the program, said spraying will occur each week on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday evenings. If weather interferes, the schedule will be amended. The schedule is the same
as 2024 and is available online under “vector control districts map.”

Gee said spraying should not impact beekeepers’ hives, but beekeepers who want to register their
sites can call Gee at 256-233-8747.

Because of the city’s growth of new homes, routes may be amended, if needed. Gee said any
changes will be announced.

Gee said citizens can help reduce breeding sites for mosquitoes by doing the following:
 Dispose of old buckets, cans, bottles or jars.
 Repair leaky pipes and keep drains and gutters unclogged.
 Routinely scrub and change water in bird baths and pet watering dishes.
 Properly discard of unused tires.
 Turn wheelbarrows, tubs and wading pools upside down when not in use.
 Keep weeds, vines and grass trimmed.
 Fill tree holes with sand.
