ATHENS – The Executive Committee of the Athens State University Board of Trustees met on June 8, 2016 to set a tuition rate for the 2016-17 academic year. The committee was asked to consider raising tuition for both traditional and nontraditional undergraduate courses by 3.8% for classes beginning in the fall of 2016. The increase in tuition will permit the University to balance the 2016-17 budget based on input from the University Budget Advisory Committee as well as President Bob Glenn and senior administrators. The Executive Committee voted unanimously to approve the increase.
In making the recommendation to the committee, President Glenn noted the additional revenue will be used to fund a number of items including academic technology enhancements, degree completion scholarships, debt service, and to cover increased health insurance costs. “While we strive to provide the absolute best value for our students, there are times when it becomes necessary to increase tuition to ensure that we continue to provide the quality education our students have come to expect from Athens State University,” states Dr. Glenn. “This step will allow us to maintain an affordable rate that ensures our current and future students continue to have access to first-class higher education opportunities in North Alabama. We appreciate the Executive Committee’s oversight and support in making that possible.”
The full Board of Trustees will meet on Friday, July 15, 2016, to approve the University budget for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2016.
