ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson reporss a fatal shooting in Athens in the evening of Thursday, January 25:
“Last night around 11:30 the police department was notified of a shooting at 2018 Levert Avenue. When officers arrived they located Cheryl L Holt 35 years in the living room. Holt had one gunshot wound to her chest. Holt had passed away before emergency personal arrived. Holt’s husband told officers he had accidentally shot his wife.
Investigators have spent most of this morning interviewing Holt’s husband and processing the scene of the shooting. Holt’s body has been transported by the coroner’s office to the Huntsville of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
This investigation is continuing and no arrest has been made at this time. When new evidence in this case is received and evaluated we will reevaluate the status of this case. At the completion of this investigation investigators will carry the District Attorney a copy and ask him evaluate it for a future Grand Jury to review. “
