ATHENS-Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson issued a statement regarding the arrest of a suspect wanted in a robbery that took place in the early morning hours of Friday, September 7:
“This morning shortly before 1:00 the police department received a call of a robbery at the Mapco on South Jefferson Street.
When Officers arrived they were told by the clerk a white male with a pistol came in the store and demanded all the money and two cartons of cigarettes. The male then ran out of the store going south.
Officers were able to watch the stores video and Lt. Dusty Meadows recognized the robber as Charles Edward Vondenbenken.
This morning investigators located Vondenbenken. He was interviewed by Sgt. Brett Constable and charged with robbery first degree. He was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail.
There were no injuries in the robbery.”
