ATHENS-The Older, Wiser, and Livelier Seniors from the Athens Activity Center (the O.W.L.S.) have returned from this year’s statewide Master’s Games in Trussville with medal after medal.
More than a dozen local seniors traveled to Trussville to compete against seniors from all across Alabama in the multi-day competition. Together, they brought home nearly 40 bronze, silver, and gold medals in various competitions, such as dominos, rook, cornhole, and softball throw.

The Master’s Games celebrate active aging through friendly athletic and recreational competition, and this year’s event was a huge success for the Athens team.
“These games are not only a fun get-together, but they actually get very competitive, much more competitive than people would think,” said Athens Activity Center Director Linda Black. “Our O.W.L.S. supported each other the whole time and showed everyone what it means to be Older, Wiser, and Livelier. I could not be more proud of them.”
This trip was made possible by the generosity of our community. The Activity Center’s seniors would not have had this opportunity without the funds raised and donated by local individuals, local nonprofits, and local businesses. Their support covered travel and lodging for the multi-day competition in Trussville, allowing every senior who wanted to compete the chance to go.
“Our O.W.L.S. really do inspire all of us,” said Mayor Ronnie Marks. “They remind us that age is just a number and that staying active and connected never goes out of style. Congratulations to each of them for bringing home the medals, and thank you to everyone in our community who helped make this trip possible.”
