Archie Hobert King, smart and funny and kind and generous, lost his hard-fought battle with ALS on Sept. 6, 2016. He was a good man who will be terribly missed. Archie was born Nov. 3, 1941, in Morgan County to Fontaine and Zula Widner King. He grew up near Hartselle but came to Mississippi for college and stayed. He had a long and satisfying career as an elementary teacher and principal with Jackson Public Schools. After retirement from JPS he enjoyed a second career as a licensed professional counselor and human relations consultant.
Archie was preceded in death by his parents and a beloved granddaughter, Bella Newman. He is survived by his wife, Babs; his son Stephen King, wife Stacy, and their sons, Wiley and Hunter; his stepson Neil Wolf, wife Kim, and their son, Lucien; his stepdaughter Betsy Ross, husband Kevin, and their children, Ellie and Patrick; and two sisters, Kay Depoyster and Gail Graham.
The family would like to thank Archie’s loyal and attentive friends, his physician Dr. Amanda Witt, and the entire Hospice Ministries family.
Visitation will be held at St. Columb’s Episcopal Church in Ridgeland from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Sept. 8 and at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 with a Memorial Service to follow at St. Columb’s.
In lieu of flowers, Archie requested that donations be made to Batson Baptist Children’s Hospital or to the Iona House of St. Columb’s Episcopal Church or to the charity of your choice.
