Andrew Jackson Sims – Obituary

Andrew Jackson Sims, age 95, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at his home in Florence.

Visitation will be today starting at noon at the New Lebanon Freewill Baptist Church, Cairo, Mississippi. The service will follow at 1 p.m. with Brother Earl McAnally officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Joe A. Sims Jr., John L. Sims, Kerry Sims, Jessie O. Sims, Sherrell Umfress, and Mike Wade will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Sims was an educator in the Lauderdale County schools from 1954 until he retired in 1982. He resided in Lauderdale County for the past 63 years and attended Northwood United Methodist Church in Florence. Mr. Sims was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Army attached to Chemical Air Operation.

Mr. Sims was preceded in death by his parents, J.L. Sims Sr. and Clemmie Whitfield Sims, and three brothers, J.L. Sims Jr., Robert D. Sims, and Bolivar A. (Tommy) Sims.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Umfress Sims; his daughter, Dr. Andrea Sims; a sister, Sammie Nell Sims Gill; and two brothers, Joe. A Sims Sr. and Billy P. Sims; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
