American Legion Post 31 of Tuscumbia Memorial Day Program Set for May 27

TUSCUMBIA-American Legion Post 31 of Tuscumbia is sponsoring the annual Memorial Day Program on Monday, May 27, 2024, on the lawn of the Colbert County Courthouse at 11:00 a.m.

The Post 31 Honor Guard will present the colors and place the memorial wreath in honor of those who gave the supreme sacrifice for our country. The program will be presided over by Commander Doug Hargett. Special Music will be provided by Grace Kennington, vocalist.

The Keynote Speaker will be Sergeant First Class Jeffrey A. Blackwell, Special Forces Group (Airborne), Alabama Army National Guard (Retired). A native of Sheffield, Sgt. Blackwell has served many deployments, including counter narcotics and Anti- Terrorism/Force Protection missions, providing intelligence for U.S. Southern Command on narcotics and terrorist activity in South America. During Operation Enduring Freedom/Afghanistan/ Central Asia, SFC Blackwell served as the senior communications sergeant for a Special Operational A-Team, providing strategic assets .  He provided ground tactics training and technical training for communications equipment as tactical advisor to an Afghan Militia Forces Battalion. SFC Blackwell’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army
Commendation Medals, and Army Achievement Medals. Sgt. Blackwell resides in Tusumbia with his wife, Shannon Blackwell.

Following the program, a Barbecue luncheon will be provided at the Church of Christ Annex at the corner of Main and 4 th Streets, compliments of Mr. L. O. Bishop and Post 31. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

In case of inclement weather, both the program and luncheon will be held at the Church of Christ Annex.
