Alverene Smallwood Owen – Obituary

alvereneAlverene Smallwood Owen, 86, of Lacey’s Spring died Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Hospice of Marshall County’s Shepherd’s Cove.

Mrs. Owen was born April 12, 1930, to Welmer and Leona Clark Smallwood. She was married to Ray Owen for 59 years.

She taught in the Morgan County School System and retired after 31 years. She then started a second career with Walmart where she worked for 17 years. She graduated from Jacksonville State with a bachelor of science degree, a master’s degree and AA certification from Alabama A&M. She was a member of Alabama Teacher’s Association.

She was an active member of Rescue Methodist Church and loved working with the youth.

She is survived by her husband, Ray Owen; son, W. Ray Owen; nieces, nephews, many friends, former students and church family.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Olene Smallwood Blevins.

The funeral was at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Rescue Methodist Church with Jarod Andrews and Frankie Flack officiating and Benny Sherman providing the music. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel directing.

Pallbearers were Stanley Black, Stuart Black, Michael Childers, James Dunn, Greg Parker and Jackie Puckett.

Honorary pallbearer was Scott Whisenant.
