Alice Marie Guess, age 74 of Cowan, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2020 at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. She was born in Franklin County on March 22, 1946 to the late Lloyd Ray and Margie D. (Throneberry) Ellis. Before her retirement, Marie had been employed for over twenty-five years as a custodian with the Franklin County School System, working at Mary Sharp, South Middle School, and Cowan Elementary. She was a devoted member of Harrison Chapel Methodist Church and was a God fearing woman who loved to spread the word about Jesus. In her spare time, Marie enjoyed shopping, especially for purses, crocheting, camping, fishing, and traveling to Virginia and North Carolina. Her family will remember her loving, selfless, and caring nature. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, LeRoy Ellis, Billy Ray Ellis, and Tommy Jean Ellis; and several nieces and nephews. Marie is survived by her loving husband of fifty-three years, George Guess of Cowan; children, Margie (Ransom) Green of Cowan, Rosie (Marvin) Saylors of Sparta, and Tommy (Cindy) Guess of Cowan; grandchildren, Brandi Matthews, Ashley Sells, Cody Green, Kelly Guess, Jenny Strickland, Adam Saylors, and Hayden Nunley; great-grandchildren, Bailey Matthews, Briley Matthews, Maecie Sells, Scarlett Sells, Ransom Green, Brady Green, Jacob Simmons, Kara Guess, Klayton Guess, Jada Strickland, Raina Saylors, and Thomas Nunley; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Private services will be held with burial at Cowan Montgomery Cemetery. The register book and memorial cards will be available under the carport of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home from 1 pm-7 pm on Tuesday, April 21 and from 10 am-1:30 pm on Wednesday, April 22.
