Funeral Services for Mrs. Alice Browning McDonald, age 91 of Ashland, will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church at 3:00 P.M. with Bro. Joseph Stanford and Bro. Jason Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
Mrs. McDonald passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025 at the Clay County Nursing Home. She was a lifelong resident of Clay County, and attended Bibb Graves High School. Once out of high school, she began raising her family with her husband Howard, and dedicated her life to raising her 6 children. Mrs. McDonald became of Member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in 1950, and was the longest active member of the church. She taught Sunday school of all ages, sang in the choir, and was involved with the Ladies Fellowship groups. Mrs. Alice was an honorary member of the Pink Ladies, and volunteered with the Christian thrift store and Carey Baptist Association for several years. She read the Christmas Story to her children when they young, and continued the tradition with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies included tending to her garden and flower beds, reading the Guideposts and devotionals, but most of all, enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and her church family.
Mrs. McDonald is survived by her 6 children: Dianna Homburger (Tom) of Ashland, Carol Haynes (Robert) of Cullman, Steve McDonald (Dorothy) of Ashland, Nelda Johnson (Rodney) of Lincoln, Dena Burkhalter (Steve) and Emiley Glenn (Jerry), both of Ashland; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters: Peggy Jacobs (John) of Tipton, Ga, Jane Childers of Huntsville, and JoAnne Carraway (Chris) of Auburn; two brothers: John Browning (Sandra) and Danny Browning, both of Ashland; plus a large extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Daniel Jackson and Edna Saxon Browning; her husband, Howard D. McDonald; 5 sisters: Pauline Stiles, Florine Gilbert, Mary Kerr, Catherine Taylor, and Bobbie McGuire; and one brother, Perry Browning.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Tommy Homburger, Lee Haynes, Daniel McDonald, Jeremy Stanford, Chris Burkhalter, and David Burkhalter.
Her visitation will take place on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church beginning at 1:30 P.M. until service time at 3:00 P.M.
