Alex Black, 93, was born and grew up near Clearfield, PA, and served in the Navy from 1943-1945 during World War II as an Aviation Cadet. He received his degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburg in 1949 and served in the Naval Reserves until 1962. His career with the United States Government started after college with their Missile programs. He arrived in Huntsville in 1957 as a Rocket Scientist. When the program was split into NASA and the Army Missile Command, he became part of AMC working on Sam D Strategic Missile Defense which became the Patriot in 1976.
An important part of his life was Covenant Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marvinteen; his children Karen Conners (Rex) and Tim Black (Diana); and six grandchildren, Cameron, Amelia, Braxton and Olivia Conners, and Martin and Elisabeth Black.
Visitation will be from Friday, October 25, 2019 from 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm with the funeral service immediately following at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.
