TUSCUMBIA-Alabama State House Representative Kerry Underwood (District 3) will present Alabama House Joint Resolution 234 at the NYC SEAL Swim Closing Ceremony in Manhattan on August 19. Underwood’s life long friend, Alabamian and retired SEAL Richard Clifford will be participating in the event and representing the only State flag in this event to raise awareness and funding for the Navy SEAL Foundation. The theme for this year’s event is Patriotic Unity.
Underwood coordinated a previous fitness fundraiser locally at QC Fitness Lab in Tuscumbia that raised over $8,000 to support Clifford’s involvement in this notable event. Clifford will swim with two AL flags that have been flown (and credentialed) over the capital in July and will take his pic with one in front of the Statue of Liberty during the event.  The Alabama flags will be signed, along with all American flags carried by SEALS on the last leg into the 9/11 Memorial, by the SEALS participating. Alabama is the only state to have a participating state flag.
According to the Foundation’s website, “Participants will enter the Hudson River at Liberty State Park, NJ, and swim to the Statue of Liberty, where they do 100 honor pushups and 22 pull-ups for our nation’s freedoms and civil liberties. Participants then swim from the Statue of Liberty to Ellis Island, where they do 100 honor pushups and 22 pull-ups for our nation’s diversity and all those who came to our nation seeking a better life. Participants then swim across the Hudson River to Battery Park, Manhattan, NYC, where they grab American Flags and run to the World Trade Center in Manhattan, NYC.  At the World Trade Center, participants do 100 honor pushups and 22 pull-ups to honor all those who lost their lives on 9/11, Extortion 17, and all Americans who put it on the line for our nation.”
