luiATHENS. – Artist Michael Liu will present Paper and Portraits, a showing of works on charcoal and paper cuttings at the Alabama Center for the Arts beginning on December 16 and lasting through February 25, 2015.
Liu, a native of Kweishan, Taiwan worked as an engineer but returned to his early interest in art and opened galleries in Taoyuan, Taiwan, and Evadon, Switzerland. His art is self-taught and reflects his personal interests and his experiences in both the culture in which he grew up and the Western culture which he experienced as an adult. Since 2008 Liu has explored an interest in paper cutting, an art form that has roots in both Chinese and Japanese art.
Today, Michael divides his time between Taiwan and Alabama. His bicultural life is expressed in his signature which overlaps his western name with his Chinese personal stamp. Michael creates art as inspired and by private commission.
A reception for Liu is planned to coincide with the show’s opening on December 16 at 5:30 pm. The reception and admission to the gallery are free and open to the public.
The Alabama Center for the Arts located at 133 2nd Avenue in Decatur, Alabama. Exhibit hours are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, and Friday from 8:00 to noon. More information can be found at alabamacenterforthearts.org.
