MONTGOMERY– As we join with family and friends to celebrate this Memorial Day weekend, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) wants adults to make a plan in advance for how they’re going to get home safely if their activities include alcohol. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2012, 257 people were killed in drunk driving crashes in Alabama.
“MADD wants Montgomery residents to know that preventing tragedy can be as simple as planning ahead for a non-drinking designated driver for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend,” said MADD Alabama, State Victim Services Specialist Pamela Morton.
Law enforcement agencies across the country will be out in force as part of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” crackdown, and MADD’s Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving® includes support for these types of high-visibility law enforcement efforts to deter and detect drunk driving.
“My 21 year old son, Renota, was struck violently from behind and killed by a repeat drunk while sitting at a red light. I will never see his sweet smile or hug him tight again,” says Montgomery resident Carolyn Tyus. “I urge everyone to drive safe and sober this Memorial Day weekend. I will be spending a great deal of time this weekend at the cemetery. I don’t want to meet you there any time soon.”
