Adelia Huffman Gibson of Huntsville passed away on Easter Sunday. She was born in Nashville, TN, graduated from East Nashville H.S., and Vanderbilt University with a degree in Chemistry.

Adelia married Joseph T. Gibson in 1949. Joe was a graduate of West Point, so Adelia spent 28 years as a dedicated army wife. The Gibsons moved to Huntsville in 1972 with the Army and made the community their home after Joe’s retirement in 1977. Adelia and Joe were married for 63 years until his death in 2012.

Known to friends and family as “Dee” or “Dee Dee,” she was dedicated to her family, active in her faith, and worked to better her community throughout her life. While she raised her four children, she was active in the Officers Wives Club and taught Sunday school. Adelia was a member of the First United Methodist Church and served as a circle leader of the United Methodist Women for many years.

Adelia was also a volunteer for Help Line for over 30 years and was a charter member of the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.

She is survived by four loving children: daughters, Janet Toenes of Eagle River, AK and Lynn Whyte of Lakeland, TN; sons, Joseph T. Gibson, Jr. of Friendswood, TX and Stuart G. Gibson of Madison, AL; ten grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 on Monday, April 29 with the service following at the chapel at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Huntsville Botanical Gardens or Help Line.
