Ruffles and Lace Book Signing Tea with Charles E. Cabler
Tuesday, October 11, 10:00 am-12:00 pm
Florence-Lauderdale Public Library

Local author Charles E. Cabler will be hosting a book signing tea for his new book Ruffles and Lace: A Southern Lady’s Journey in Business and Fashion Design, which tells the story of a fascinating but little-known figure in Florence history.

Ruffles and Lace is an entrepreneurial story of a Florence, Alabama lady, Genett H. Johnson, and her intriguing journey into business and children’s clothing fashion design. The story begins in 1974 as her passion for sewing evolved into the ownership of Style Rite Fabrics shop in Florence. In addition to owning the fabrics shop, during the past thirty-five years, Genett and her business partner, Anita Jaynes, have become prominent children’s clothing fashion designers for the McCall’s Pattern Company in New York City under the business name “Ruffles and Lace.” More than one million Ruffles and Lace patterns have been sold across the United States and in many other countries. This book contains copies of several pattern covers, including three of her first patterns published in the McCall Pattern catalogue in 1983 and 1984. If you are a seamstress with an interest in children’s clothing, you may have used some of these patterns.
This inspiring story of Genett’s creativity, determination, resilience, and commitment to her life’s principles to achieve financial prosperity may surprise you. Her accomplishments in redefining children’s clothing designs will fascinate you, and her dedication to raise funds to help eradicate breast cancer will make you appreciate her.

Charles E. Cabler is a retired bank Vice President who has written several business books, such as What Every Employee Should Know To Be Successful, and a humanitarian book called The Chains of Marley: Our Christian and Humanitarian Benevolent Responsibility. In Ruffles and Lace, Cabler expands his body of work to tell a more personal story. For more information, call 256-764-6564, ext. 28.

T.S. Stribling and the Pulitzer Prize
with Dr. Kenneth Vickers
Sunday, October 16, 2:00 pm
Florence-Lauderdale Public Library

Celebrate T.S. Stribling and the legacy of the Pulitzer Prize with a discussion led by Dr. Kenneth Vickers.
2016 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Pulitzer Prize. In October of 2016, the Alabama Center for the Book and the Alabama Writers’ Forum will induct Pulitzer Prize-winning Tennessee novelist T. S. Stribling into the Alabama Writers Hall of Fame. T.S. Stribling scholar Dr. Kenneth Vickers will examine the legacy of Stribling’s prize-winning novel, The Store (1932), which was part of his “Florence Trilogy,” to Southern literature in general and to Florence, Alabama, in particular. Dr. Vickers will also address the potentially adverse impact the winning of the award had upon Stribling’s career and legacy as a novelist.
Dr. Kenneth Vickers is the author of T.S. Stribling: A Life of the Tennessee Novelist. He is a Professor of History, Coordinator of the History Program, and Chair of the Division of Social Sciences at Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, TN. For more information, call 256-764-6564, ext. 28.
