Loretta Winesette Douglas Profile Photo With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Loretta Gay Winesette Douglas, affectionately known as “Cricket,” who entered eternal rest on May 5, 2026. Loretta lived a life rooted in devotion, resilience, grace, and unconditional love.

Born in Carroll County, Virginia, Loretta later moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, when her father’s engineering career led the family to work connected with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Eventually, she made her home in Huntsville, Alabama, after her beloved husband, affectionately known as “The Don,” joined NASA during the exciting early years of the space age.

Loretta originally pursued studies in engineering alongside her husband at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Though life led her down a different path, she carried the spirit of an engineer throughout her life: thoughtful, capable, resourceful, and strong. She chose instead to devote herself fully to raising her family and creating a home filled with warmth, faith, laughter, and enduring love.

Standing just over five feet tall, Loretta possessed a strength far larger than her stature. She was the steady foundation of her family, radiating kindness, wisdom, humor, and fierce loyalty to those she loved. Her gentle spirit and determined heart carried generations forward, and her love created a legacy that will continue to bloom through her family for years to come.

Loretta will be remembered for her boundless kindness, unwavering dedication, quiet intelligence, and the care she poured into every aspect of life. Whether through comforting words, home-cooked meals, steadfast encouragement, or simply her presence, she left lasting fingerprints of love on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

She is survived by her devoted children, Joseph Donald Douglas, Jr. (Jada Lynne), Julia Rachell Douglas, and Mitchell Winsette Douglas (Janet); five cherished grandchildren, Jamie Michelle Douglas, Marco Tordera (Amy), Autumn Borden (Jason), Jeremy Lawrence (Jennifer), and Julie Livingston; six beloved great-grandchildren, Mollie Maze (Dalton), Bronwyn Borden, Mason Lawrence, McCoy Lawrence, Lily Livingston, and Hank Livingston; and two precious great-great-grandchildren, Walker Maze and Sawyer Maze, along with many treasured nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Though our hearts ache in her absence, we find peace knowing she has entered eternal glory and reunion with loved ones gone before her. Her life was a beautiful testament to faith, sacrifice, perseverance, and unconditional love.

The family kindly asks for continued prayers, comfort, and love during this difficult time as they celebrate the remarkable life of a woman who meant so much to so many.

A service to celebrate her life will be held Friday, May 8, at 11:00 AM at Berryhill Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00.

“Her life was a quiet masterpiece, stitched together with faith, sacrifice, strength, and love.”
