Shirley graduated from Elkton High School in Elkton, Maryland, and married Captain Errol Hayes, Jr., in Anchorage, Alaska in 1955. Together, they embraced the nomadic Army life for 27 years, forming lifelong friendships and memories across the world. The family settled in Huntsville in 1977.

She developed a wide circle of friends throughout her travels and was an enthusiastic volunteer in many Army wives’ organizations. She was a dedicated member of Latham Church and Rotary Ann in Huntsville. She especially loved her church community, cooking her famous Chinese dinner, entertaining friends and playing bridge.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the Latham Church staff, Anetta’s Care Home and to the members of her Compassus Hospice Care Team for their love, attentive care, and gentle support.

A funeral service will be held at Latham Church on Tuesday, May 5th at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Maple Hill Cemetery. All are welcome to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Latham Church, 109 Weatherly Road SE, Huntsville, AL 35802.
