LCDR James Lucien Fortin, of Huntsville, AL, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 11, 2026, at age 46. He was born on February 5, 1980, in Sheffield, AL. After graduating from Huntsville High School, he went on to complete a bachelor’s degree from The University of North Alabama.
James served in the United States Coast Guard from 1998 to 2026, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. In 2010, he deployed to Kuwait Naval Base/Port of Ash Shuaiba during Operation Enduring Freedom. His time stationed in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and Illinois instilled discipline, tenacity and strong leadership skills.
James received numerous citations and awards for meritorious service in the performance of duty. These recognitions include the Coast Guard Port Security Insignia, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal with Operational Distinguishing Service, and the Coast Guard Commendation Medal with Operational Distinguishing Service.
James was proud to serve, and his devotion to duty was matched only by his commitment and love for his family. He enjoyed music, cooking, hunting, fishing, and planning trips with his family.
James is survived by his loving wife, Ellen Segrest Fortin; his daughter, Abigail Clay; son, Jameson Lucien; his father, Rene Lucien Fortin (Sandra); his sisters, Mary Catherine Lee (Ashley), and Anne Marie Cadman (Jeremy); and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws. James was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine Chambers Fortin, his brother, Steven Somers Fortin, his cousin, uncle, and mother-in-law.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, at First United Methodist Church.
