LAUDERDALE COUNTY– On Thursday, Feb. 26, Special Agents with the Alabama Law
Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) launched an officer-
involved shooting investigation involving deputies with the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m., when deputies with the Lauderdale County
Sheriff’s Office were conducting an investigation concerning a stolen vehicle on County Road
656 in Lauderdale County. A subject, later identified as Ronald L. Craig, 38, of Lawrenceburg,
Tenn., attempted to strike deputies with the 1996 Jeep Cherokee Sport he was driving which
caused deputies to fire their weapons. Ultimately, the Jeep Cherokee became disabled near the
intersection of County Road 520 and Highway 207 in Anderson, located within Lauderdale
County. Craig then fled on foot and entered a nearby pond, where he went beneath the water and
never resurfaced. The Florence Dive Team responded to the scene to assist in the search and
recovery effort. Craig’s body was recovered and has been transported to the Alabama
Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
Nothing further is available as the investigation remains ongoing. Once complete, the findings
will be turned over to the Lauderdale County District Attorney’s Office.
