Susan Dawn Chapman, age 67, of Arab, Alabama, passed away early in the morning on January 27, 2026. Susan was born to John Quarles, Jr. and Margaret Quarles in Sacramento, CA on December 1, 1958. Susan is survived by her husband of 42 years, Edmund “Ed” Chapman and their son, Alex Chapman, age 21. Both Ed and Alex reside in Arab Alabama. Alex has a daughter, Meredith, age 3 years and four months. Meredith was the “light” in Susan’s life. Susan is also survived by two biological sisters, Jenifer Quarles of Sacramento, CA and Karen Morrison of Lihue, Hawaii. Susan’s mother also adopted three children, her mother’s biological great-grandchildren. This makes the three children also siblings of Susan. They are Monica Quarles of Sacramento, CA, Michael Quarles of Sacramento, CA and Abreyanna Quarles, of Sacramento, CA. She is survived by several nieces and nephews as well all of whom reside in California.
Susan has a degree from American River College in Sacramento, CA. She was a cosmetologist for many years in Sacramento before going to work for Sacramento County from which she retired prior to moving to Alabama with her spouse and their son. Susan is a paralegal as well and worked in the courts in Alabama until she retired. Since then she has continued to work in Arab mostly at a golf course where Ed also works but also for a period of time at a local grocery store.
Susan is known as a good friend and a loving spouse, mother and grandmother. She has been involved in her church for years and is known as a staple in the church even throughout the periods of time in which she had medical issues happening.
Susan is known for her cooking and her love for creating beauty in her home. She enjoyed having parties and providing the food and decorations for these events as well as helping out at church events. She had a knack for bringing joy to others and celebrating others in these ways.
Another passion of Susan’s was her love and care for animals. As a child and youth, she would frequently bring home a stray cat or dog. She has always had one or both of these animals in her care throughout her adult life.
Susan will be greatly missed by her family and friends as well as her church community. She will be laid to rest at Arab Memorial Cemetery at 2:00pm. There will be no funeral service per Susan’s request. Arab Heritage Memorial Chapel assisting the family with arrangements,
