Limestone County Deputies Along With K9 Ares Find Meth After Conducting Traffic Stop

ATHENS-The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office reports that on January 8, 2026, the Limestone County Narcotics Unit conducted a traffic stop within the city limits of Athens.
During the traffic stop, K9 Ares was deployed to conduct a free-air sniff of the vehicle. K9 Ares alerted to the presence of narcotics. A subsequent search of the vehicle was performed, which resulted in the discovery of approximately four (4) ounces of methamphetamine inside the truck.
As a result of the investigation, Gary Edward Phillips, 47, of Athens, Alabama, was arrested and charged with Drug Trafficking. No bond has been set at this time.
Billy Ray Morris Jr., 45, of Elkmont, Alabama, was also arrested and charged with Drug Trafficking. No bond has been set at this time.
“This arrest is another example of the hard work and dedication of our Narcotics Unit and K9 teams,” said Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin. “These substances destroy lives and families, and we remain committed to holding offenders accountable and keeping Limestone County safe.”
