Joel Maurice Allaway, 89 of Athens, Alabama, passed away on Thursday, January 8th, 2026, at his son’s residence. He was born to Nellie McElroy Allaway and Marvin Allaway on May 23rd, 1936. He was one of 6 children. He grew up near Anniston Army Depot, in Anniston, Alabama, and graduated from Anniston High School. He joined the Army in 1959, and was stationed in Bad Kissingen, Germany, as a switchboard control operator. He worked for National Cash Register Corporation for many years and later retired from General Motors after 20 years there. He worked very hard in his life and loved his family very much. He was a calm, steady, and generous man. He traveled the world with his family and loved sharing his adventures and stories with others.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 52 years, Melissa Stinnett Allaway; parents Marvin and Nellie Allaway; brothers Marel Allaway, Melvin Allaway, and Melton Allaway; and sisters Betty (Allaway) Prather and Jean (Allaway) Stepp.
He is survived by his son Nicholas Allaway, daughter-in-law Lauren, 4 grandchildren – Flynn, Barrett, Lillian, and Nolan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered for his hard work ethic, tremendous love for his family, generosity, and helpful nature towards others. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends and family are invited to gather to pay their respects at the visitation on Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, from 6:00-8:00pm at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday, January 14th, at 11:00 am at the same location. Mr. Allaway will be laid to rest next to his precious wife in a private family service.
