LIMESTONE COUNTY-On Friday, November 21, 2025, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Limestone County Dispatch received a report of a shooting in the parking lot of the Piney Chapel Dollar General on Highway 127 in Limestone County. Deputies and investigators immediately responded, locating the victim and initiating a search for the suspect, who had fled the scene on foot.
Within six minutes of the initial call, deputies located and detained the alleged shooter, identified as Erik Bryars, 34, of Athens. Following scene processing and multiple witness interviews, investigators determined that an argument involving both men and a female escalated into violence, during which Bryars allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire, discharging the weapon at least five times.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The firearm used in the incident was recovered from Bryars. Investigators established probable cause to charge Bryars with Attempted Murder. The investigation remains ongoing, and no bond has been set at this time.
