Betty Steele Uptain Betty Steele Uptain, 79, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at Princeton Baptist Medical Center.

In accordance with her wishes no visitation is planned.  A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at  North Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper. The Rev. Hollis Alexander will officiate.  On behalf of our family and in accordance with Betty’s wishes, casual dress is preferred.

A 1964 graduate of Curry High School, she was a school bus driver for the Walker County Board of Education for over 25 years, during which time she had the privilege of transporting many generations of children whom she looked upon with love. Known by most of them as “Mrs. Betty”, she had a reputation of handing out treats and handmade items around the holidays. Many have reached out to her over the years  since with kind words of gratitude and compassion.

She loved to crochet, fish and study genealogy throughout her life, which she continued to do into retirement. She also loved gardening -growing her own vegetables and fruits for canning. However, she especially loved growing a multitude of types of flowers, chiefly roses. Later, her focus became spending time with her grandchildren, traveling with them to her favorite place (the beach) and sharing love and wisdom with them.

She was preceded in death by her Parents-C.W. Steele and Addie Dover Steele; her devoted Husband of 55 years-Billy J. Uptain.

She is survived by her Son and Daughter-in-law-Steven and Dana Uptain; two Grandchildren-Alexi Brooklyn Uptain and Carson Christopher James Uptain;  Close friends-Jody and Robert Lumpkin, Pat and Larry Walton, and a host of extended family, friends and neighbors.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choosing.
