Gilbert Hixon, 79, of Fort Payne, passed away Sunday, August 17, 2025. He was born June 17, 1946 in Fort Payne, Alabama, to the late Joe and Nellie Hixon. He was a graduate of Fort Payne High School where he played on the 1964 football team that won the school’s first State Championship. He went on to play briefly at Memphis State University. Gilbert never met a stranger. He enjoyed time with “the breakfast club” each morning and loved the outdoors and boating. He and Sandra camped for 19 years at Lake Guntersville State Park where he was known for his homemade ice cream. Gilbert was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. His girls fondly remember days on the job working with him. He was an avid Alabama football fan.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wilson Funeral Home with burial following in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4:30 until 7 p.m.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Sandra Haas Hixon; daughters Carri Turner (Jr.), Holly Hixon (Brad Roberts), Hayden Simmons (Kevin); grandchildren Sydney Hixon Palmer, Jacee Turner, Jayden Blackwell, Jack Riley Blackwell, Corian Simmons, Cadie Simmons, and Micah Simmons; chosen daughter LeAnn Bain; and his beloved rescue pup Bougie.
He was preceded in death by his brother Jack Hixon and sister Harriett Thompson.
