SHEFFIELD-The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area’s updated exhibit on the Old Railroad Bridge, in
Sheffield, opens Monday, Aug. 18, at the Courtland Public Library.

“The Memphis & Charleston Railroad Bridge: Connecting the Shoals” is a six-panel traveling
exhibit focusing on the bridge’s history.

“This exhibit explores how the bridge enabled new forms of local transportation, from railroads
to automobile travel, and how the ‘opening’ of northwest Alabama to commerce had far-
reaching impacts on the people living here,” said Clayton Davis, MSNHA historic resources
manager. “We wanted to share the fascinating history of this remarkable site and make the
story accessible to everyone.”

Leaving Courtland on Sept. 4, the exhibit goes to the Historic Decatur Union Depot, Sept. 8-26;
Athens-Limestone Public Library, Sept. 29-Oct. 17; and Leighton Civic Center, Oct. 20-Nov. 7.

The exhibit is funded in whole by an Alabama Humanities Alliance grant. Admission is free.
