George Donald Dawson passed away peacefully on August 3rd, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and love for his family and friends and of service to his community and country. George was born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, to Homer and Eva Dawson. After graduating from high school, he went on to attend the University of Arkansas where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. He entered service in the United States Army, spending two years in active duty. He continued his military service for the next three decades serving in both the Alabama National Guard and the United States Army Reserves where he rose to the distinguished rank of Colonel. After his Army deployment, he went to work at Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas. There he met the love of his life and wife of sixty-four years, Lonetta T. Dawson.
After moving to Huntsville, Alabama, in 1963, he put his engineering degree to work at the Army Missile Command where he was often involved in projects related to the early space mission programs.
For over sixty years, George was a devoted and faithful member of the Methodist Church where he often volunteered in community outreach services.
George remained active for most of his ninety-four years. He was an avid runner and tennis player, and he also enjoyed multiple water sports and a good game of pool.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Gregory Don Dawson; his parents, Homer and Eva; his sister, Irma Garner; and his brother, Roderick Dawson.
