Billy Mack GloverBilly Mack Glover, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025. Born on Independence Day in 1931 in Jasper, Alabama, Billy was the youngest of eleven children and the grandson of a Civil War veteran.  Tragically orphaned of  his father in the early 1930s, the young Glover grew up helping his widowed mother on their family farm, where cotton was their only source  of sustenance.

At an early age, Billy joined the U.S. Navy in 1947. Serving aboard the USS Richard B. Anderson and later the USS Stembel, he traveled  across the Pacific and served during the early stages of the Korean War. From blockade missions and mine-clearance patrols to early Cold  War tensions in China and Vietnam, Billy’s service reflected both courage and quiet determination.

Billy met the love of his life, Helen King, shortly after honorable discharge in 1952 from his Navy service. They were introduced through  mutual friends in Jasper, where Helen was known for her warmth and quick wit. They married in 1953 and began a partnership that would  span more than seven decades, filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering support through every chapter of life.

Billy began his career as a TV repairman before joining Alabama Power in 1971, where he spent over two decades supervising appliance  repair operations with skill and reliability. In retirement, he remained deeply involved with the Energizers retiree group, proudly serving on its  board for more than 20 years. A dedicated member of the Civitan International and the Masonic Lodge, Billy exemplified a lifelong commitment to service and community. He was also a faithful and longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee.

Billy was a loving and deeply involved family man. He and his wife Helen celebrated 72 years of marriage, raising their daughter Gaye with  warmth and dedication. He cherished his role as “Pop” to grandchildren Ashley Boyd and Hunter Tate, and found joy in being a great-grandfather to Ashley’s children, Mosley and Camden. Whether offering gentle wisdom or simply being present, Billy’s quiet strength and love  anchored his family.

Billy’s life was one of service, humility, and unwavering commitment to those he cared for.  He will be remembered not only for his patriotism  and hard work, but for the kindness and steadiness he brought to every role he filled.

Survived by Helen King Glover, his loving wife; Gatha “Gaye” Tate, daughter, and Randy Tate, son-in-law; Ashley Boyd (née Tate),  granddaughter, her husband David Boyd, Jr., and great-granddaughters, Mosley and Camden; Hunter Tate, grandson, and his husband  Michael Wright II.

Preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas and Delonia Drummond Glover, and his siblings, Glenn Glover, Hugh Glover, John “J.T.”  Thomas Glover, Arnold Glover, Ophelia Scott, Ruby Harbor, Opel Barron, Normel Tingle, Bethel Atkins, and Mavis Collins.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday July 20th, 2025, at Collins Burke Funeral Home, with visitation 6-7pm and service at 7pm. In lieu of  flowers, the family requests donations be made to a Veterans’ organization, Humane Society, or charity of your choice.
