LIMESTONE COUNTY-On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Limestone County Deputies responded to a shooting call in the 15000 block of Sanderson Lane in Athens. The 911 call was placed by the victim, who reported that he had been shot in the back by his father.
Deputies arrived on scene and took Charles Lynn Lewis, 83, of Athens, AL, into custody. Lewis was found in possession of the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division responded, and a search warrant was executed at the residence.
Based on physical evidence and witness statements, investigators determined that Lewis had lured the victim to the scene due to an ongoing personal dispute. Upon arrival, Lewis reportedly told the victim he intended to kill him before producing a handgun. As the victim attempted to flee, Lewis fired two shots, striking the victim once in the back.
The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.
Following the investigation, probable cause was established to charge Lewis with Attempted Murder. He was transported to the Limestone County Jail, where he is being held. Bond will be set at a later date.

I’m proud of the professionalism and dedication our team continues to show under pressure. Our office remains committed to doing everything we can to protect Limestone County’s citizens and pursue justice for victims of violent crime.” ~ Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin
