Governor Ivey Calls Special Election for Alabama House District 13

MONTGOMERY – Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday signed a proclamation to set special election dates for Alabama House District 13. This seat was previously held by Rep. Matt Woods.

Governor Ivey set the special primary election for Tuesday, September 30, 2025; the special primary runoff, if necessary, for Tuesday, October 28, 2025; and the special general election for Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

“We are proud to now have Matt Woods in the Alabama Senate, and I know he will continue to serve his community and the state of Alabama with great commitment,” said Governor Ivey. “The people of House District 13 have an important choice ahead in this special election, and I encourage all voters to participate and help ensure their district continues to have strong, effective representation.”

The deadline for qualifying with major political parties will be Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. The deadline for all independent candidates and/or minor parties is Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.

House District 13 includes portions of Walker County.

STATE OF ALABAMA 

PROCLAMATION 

BY THE GOVERNOR 

WHEREAS a vacancy exists in the Alabama House of Representatives in District 13

WHEREAS, under the Constitution and laws of the State of Alabama, it is my duty as Governor, by proclamation, to call and set the dates of all special elections to fill this vacancy for the remainder of the term for which Representative Matt Woods was elected

WHEREAS due consideration should be given to the rights and privileges of the citizens of Walker County who live in House of Representatives District 13 to be afforded full representation in the Alabama Legislature; and 

WHEREAS all interested citizens and political parties should be allowed to reasonably participate in the process of selecting a new representative for House of Representatives District 13

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Kay Ivey, Governor of the State of Alabama, by virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the State of Alabama, do hereby proclaim and call the following special elections to be held in Walker County, State of Alabama, House of Representatives District 13, for the purpose of electing a member of the Alabama House of Representatives for District 13

A Special Primary Election shall be held on Tuesday, September 30, 2025

A Special Primary Runoff Election shall be held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, if necessitated by one candidate not receiving a majority of the votes cast in the Special Primary Election for either major party

A Special General Election shall be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2026

FURTHERMORE, all candidates qualifying with major political parties should be advised that the last day for any candidate to qualify with their respective parties regarding this election will be Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. The two major political parties shall certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, 2025

FURTHERMORE, all independent candidates and any minor parties seeking ballot access are advised that the deadline for filing the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State shall be Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
