Melvin Thorne, 81, passed away Monday, March 31, 2025 at his residence. He was born in Red Bay, AL to Elmer L. Thorne and Rival Woods Thorne. Melvin was self-employed as a construction contractor for twenty-five years and was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he was a tanker and truck mechanic.
Services will be Wednesday, April 2, 1 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel, Belmont, MS with Bro. Wayne Bumgart officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 2, 11-1 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home, Belmont, MS. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery, Golden, MS. Deaton Funeral Home, Belmont, MS will be in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Judy Wells Thorne; daughters, Charlotte Slayton Blake (Ken), Renee Dees (Randy), Tammy Wells (John), Lynne Eaton (Jimmy) and Jennifer Dyer (Hardy); two grandchildren, Justine Allen (Tim) and Justin Slayton (Kelsey); two great-grandchildren, Trevin Allen and Ceannalynne Smith; a brother, Paul Thorn and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Upton Thorne; sons, Jonathon P. Thorne, Steven Thorne and Robert Thorne; his parents; a grandson, Jonathon Lee Thorne; a brother, Charles Thorne; a sister, LaRue Crouch; three sisters-in-law, Marie Thorne, Margaret Kemp Thorn and Billie Upton; two brothers-in-law, Jimmy Crouch and Charles “Chick” Upton and a son-in-law, Phillip Slayton.
