George Lee Hempel, 77, of Huntsville, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2025. Born in Bassett, Nebraska to Philip and Marie Hempel, he grew up in Long Pine, Nebraska. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1967 and served active duty until his retirement in 1988. He served three tours in the Vietnam War 1968, 1969, and 1971. After retiring from the Army, he moved to Albertville, Alabama and began working for the US Postal Service as a rural letter carrier. He retired a second time from the Albertville Post Office. George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Heike Hempel; and his brothers, James and Alan Hempel
Survivors include sons, Michael Hempel (Melisa) of Albertville, AL and Mike Hempel (Angela) of Long Pine, NE; grandchildren Sarah, Stephanie, Sabrina and Seth; brother, Richard ‘Dick’ Hempel (Anita) of Ainsworth, NE; and sister, Jeanne Hempel Allen of Rogers, AK.
