Michelle Merritt Banes, 59, of Starkville, MS went home to be with the Lord on December 19th, 2024. Born on August 9th, 1965 in Memphis, TN to J. Mark Merritt Jr. and Susan Hagerman Merritt. Michelle grew up in North Little Rock, AR where she attended Northeast High School graduating in 1983.
After high school, Michelle attended Mississippi State University where she received her B.S. in Fisheries Management. She began her 35-year career at the College of Veterinary Medicine. During her time there, she earned her Master’s degree in Microbiology and subsequently pursued a career conducting research for the Department of Comparative Biomedical Studies. In the course of her time at the College of Veterinary Medicine, she had the opportunity to teach graduate students and co-author several research papers. Michelle, whose passion and dedication to her work touched the lives of so many, has peacefully transitioned, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and care that will continue to inspire all that knew her.
Michelle was a kind-hearted soul who found joy in the simple things. She adored her pets who she treated like family. The bond with her pets reflected her greater passion for animals, which she carried into her work. Michelle’s other love and passion in life was being a devoted mother to her two children, who she cherished with all her heart, always putting their needs first and providing them with unwavering love and guidance. Michelle was not only a loving mom and friend, but also a constant source of support, always ready with a listening ear and a heart full of understanding.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Mark and Susan Merritt. She was survived by her beloved children, Charles Mark Banes and Sarah Marie Banes of Starkville, MS; brother Trey Merritt of Little Rock AR; partner Mark Andrews and his son William Andrews of Starkville, MS.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later time and place with details to come.
