Funeral Services for Mr. Edward M. Thompson, age 88 of Mellow Valley, will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Mellow Valley Baptist Church in Mellow Valley at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Randy Anderson officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Mellow Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.
Edward Thompson passed away at Grandview Medical Center on December 1st, 2024. He was born at home in Mellow Valley on February 22nd, 1936, to James Lee Thompson, Sr and Imogene Thompson. He bought the old home place in 1972 and lived there until his death. He was a graduate of Mellow Valley High School. Shortly after graduating, he joined the United States Air Force. He served from 1955 to 1959 being stationed at Randolph AFB, TX and Elmendorf AFB, AK. At Elmendorf AFB, he was assigned to the Military Police Squadron and often told of being there when Alaska became a state and having to fall-out on the flight line in full gear when the Soviet Union would make threats against Alaska. After his military tour, he worked for Tallapoosa River Electric Coop, Williamson Lumber Company, and sold life insurance. He then went to work for Contel Telephone Company, which he ultimately retired from. He served as Executive Vice President on the Citizens Protecting Constitutional Rights group protecting private property rights of individuals in Clay County. He was a great supporter of the Mellow Valley community and the school. He served as Athletic Club president, PTA officer and supported many other efforts to improve the school. He also was a member of the Mellow Valley Park committee devoting his time and material to establishing the park.
He enjoyed riding his all-terrain vehicle on the many dirt roads in the area and giving tours to his family while telling stories. He loved dancing to Country and Western music. He dearly loved his family and devoted his later years to spending time with them.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his sons: Blane Thompson (Jennifer) of Millbrook, Tim Thompson (Lisa) of Mellow Valley and Ricky Thompson (Heather) of Mellow Valley; his daughters: Beverly Butler of Prattville and Donna Pollock (Karl) of Lineville. Eighteen grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Joyce; his parents James Lee Thompson, Sr and Imogene Jordan Thompson; his brother: James Lee Thompson, Jr.; son-in-law Kelly Butler.
Active pallbearers will be Josh Thompson, Jason Thompson, Dean Courson, Daniel Thompson, Donovan Butler and Ryan Jones. The honorary pallbearer will be Jared Thompson.
His visitation will take place prior to service at Mellow Valley Baptist Church beginning at 12:30 until service time at 2:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to Mellow Valley Baptist Church Cemetery fund or Mellow Valley Community Center fund.
