James R. Fanning, 82, of Decatur, Alabama, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.
Mr. Fanning is survived by his wife, Shirley Fanning; children, Greg Ingle (Wendy), John Ingle (Annette), David Fanning (Kimberly), Paula Humphryes (Darrell), Charla Johnson (Michael), and Charlie Fanning (Josefine); grandchildren, Nicole, Chase, Amber, Autumn, Jared, Jeremy, Ashley, Alex, Christopher, Lauren, Anthony, Kyle Austin, Andrew, Kayla, and Kelsey; 23 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Brenda Fanning and Linda Fanning; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded by his parents, William and Cecil Fanning; siblings, Wayne Fanning, Carl Fanning, Herb Fanning, Jr., David Fanning, Ronnie Fanning, Linda Fanning, and Jean Fanning; Mr. Fanning’s children’s mother, Barbara Fanning; and grandson, Adam Fanning.
Mr. Fanning Served his country as a Corpsman in the U.S. Navy, where he was assigned to a Marine Corps Unit. After serving his country, Mr. Fanning began his career and, after 40 years, retired as a mortgage broker. He was known to many as a people person and, after retiring, found himself still wanting to be around new people, so he became a Walmart greeter. For the last several years, he has been a member of the Decatur Methodist Church.
Visitation for Mr. Fanning will be held on Monday, November 4, 2024, at Berryhill Funeral Home from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m., with Bro. Jack Lovelace officiating. Interment will follow at Ford’s Chapel Cemetery.
