Betty Doris Ragland, affectionately known to family as “Nannie”, “Nannie Bug”, and “Nan”, was born November 4, 1952, to the late Jim Ed and Sarah Liza Thompson in Madison County, Alabama. She departed this life on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at her residence. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman, and her daughter, Shernette, and seven siblings. She graduated from Lee High School in 1972 in Huntsville, Alabama.
Betty accepted Christ in January of 1991 and joined A’s Chapel P.B. Church under the leadership of Elder Bobby Battle, Sr. She was a faithful Christian and servant of God who was as devoted to her church and church family as she was to her own family. Betty was President of the Usher Board, a member of the Choir and Women’s Auxiliary, and she worked hard in the kitchen. She had a very caring and loving spirit.
Professionally, Betty was a dedicated employee at Alabama A&M University in the Janitorial Department. She also worked at the Union Hill P.B. Church CDC many years before retiring January 2023.
Betty leaves to cherish her memories her son, Timothy Ragland of Huntsville, AL; sister, Elizabeth Royster of Tuscaloosa, AL; brothers: Leon and Billy Ray Thompson, both of Huntsville, AL; great aunt, Jannie Burnette of Lorain, OH; sisters-in-law: Lottie Malone Thomas, Juanita (Willie) Thompson both of Huntsville, AL, Mary Ann Kelly and Faye Luewilla, both of Ryland, AL; and brothers-in-law: Eddie Ragland and Johnny (Loretta) Ragland, all of Huntsville, AL; her best friend, Earline Edwards of Huntsville, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
The funeral service for Mrs. Betty Doris Ragland will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at the Union Hill Primitive Baptist Church (2115 Winchester Road, Huntsville, AL 35810) with Dr. Oscar L. Montgomery as officiant and Elder Bobby Battle as eulogist. Interment will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens. Mrs. Ragland will lie in repose one hour prior to funeral time.
Public viewing will be held from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m., Monday, June 3, 2024 and 8:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at the Royal Funeral Home.
